Post Office bosses have been urged to reopen a North Yorkshire branch as soon as possible after it closed unexpectedly.
The Post Office has refused to explain why the branch in Bedale has shut, saying only that it is closed for “operational reasons”.
The closure has sparked concern among residents, particularly as Bedale no longer has a bank branch.
Bedale Mayor, Councillor Christine Mollard, said the town council had been pressing the Post Office for answers and had been assured that restoring the service was a priority.
She said: “It’s an inconvenience for residents and businesses, especially for the older generation who don’t always do online banking and really rely on the Post Office. It’s always busy in there.”
A Post Office spokesperson said: “Bedale Post Office and its outreach branches are currently closed for operational reasons.
“We know how important this Post Office is to the community and we are working hard to restore service as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers.”
However, the organisation said it was unable to say when the branch would reopen.
In the meantime, customers are being directed to alternative branches in Burneston, Leyburn and Northallerton, while Aiskew Drop and Collect Post Office at Aiskew Garage can be used to send and collect pre-paid parcels.
The Post Office has advised customers to use its branch finder to check opening times and available services before travelling.
