Sutton Bank will close for three weeks this autumn while an extended programme of maintenance and improvement work is carried out.
The A170 route will be shut from 7am on Sunday, September 13, until 7pm on Sunday, October 4.
North Yorkshire Council said the work would include planned maintenance to the rock face as well as routine maintenance of the road.
The longer-than-usual programme will also allow further drainage work and repairs to be completed during the annual closure.
The council said carrying out the improvements together should reduce the need for further disruption in the future.
This year’s work will also mark the start of a wider three-year programme aimed at improving the resilience and long-term condition of Sutton Bank.
Cllr Malcolm Taylor, the council’s executive member for highways and transport, said: “Carrying out these improvements at the same time will maximise the benefits of the road closure and help minimise the need for disruption to road users in the future.
“This year’s programme also marks the start of a wider programme of improvements planned over the next three years to enhance the resilience and long-term condition of Sutton Bank.”
Cllr Alyson Baker, who represents Hillside and Raskelf, said the A170 was a vital transport link for communities, businesses and visitors travelling across North Yorkshire.
“This annual programme of works will help ensure the route remains safe, reliable and well-maintained for everyone who depends on it,” she added.
“We will do everything possible to minimise disruption and would like to thank motorists, residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation while the work is carried out.”
Access to homes will be maintained whenever possible, although the council has warned there may be periods when access is restricted because of the nature of the work.
