Northallerton and Richmond firefighters to climb equivalent of Mount Everest for charity

Firefighters from Northallerton and Richmond will come together next weekend to climb the height of Mount Everest for charity.

The crews originally wanted to raise money to support one of their colleagues, Richmond firefighter Tanya Liversedge-Gel, who has recently undergone a double mastectomy due to breast cancer.

She is also going through a course of chemotherapy.

Along with her wife she has decided to run a marathon in Death Valley this December.

The trip has already been paid for but they have set a fundraising target of £5,000 in aid of South Tees Hospital Charity and The Fire Fighters charity.

The crews wanted to support Tanya and also a little boy called Freddie Thompson who was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma at the age of just two.

However, Tanya already felt like she had already raised enough money for her marathon and charities and that the money should go to an appeal set up by Freddie’s family called Freddie’s Fight.

The event will be held in her name instead and will be called Tanya’s Ladder Climb for Freddie.

Mount Everest is 8,848 metres high and the ladder the crews will be climbing is four metres high, meaning they will have to climb the ladder some 2212 times.

The challenge will take place at Northallerton Town Hall and Square.

The proceeds will be split between Freddie’s Fight and The Fire Fighters Charity.
