A hospice leader has been awarded an OBE in the King’s New Year’s Honours List.
Tony Collins, chief executive of Herriot Hospice Homecare, which serves Hambleton and Richmondshire, has been awarded the honour in recognition of his service to the community.
Tony, who is also the chief executive of specialist bereavement and emotional wellbeing service Just ‘B’ and Harrogate-based Saint Michael’s Hospice, has been a leader in the hospice community in Yorkshire and the North East for 27 years, and also sits on the board of national charity Hospice UK.
Tony has been awarded the honour in recognition of his hospice care and emotional wellbeing work, as well as community work as a minister with the Church of England. This includes increasing hospice care in the place people call home, increasing accessibility to hospice care for those in rural areas, and introducing Yorkshire’s first specialised community bereavement service – Just ‘B’ – in 2009.
Herriot Hospice Homecare provides care and support for families living with terminal illness and bereavement across Hambleton and Richmondshire, and is soon to open the doors to its first hospice building – Herriot Hospice@The Lambert – at the former Lambert Memorial Hospital, in Thirsk. Alongside Just ‘B’ and Saint Michael’s Hospice, it makes up registered charity North Yorkshire Hospice Care.
Joint chairs of trustees for the charity, Colin Tweedie and Joanne Crewe, said: “Together, and through our work with Herriot Hospice Homecare, Just ‘B’ and Saint Michael’s Hospice, we’ve seen first hand Tony’s commitment and dedication to ensuring people across North Yorkshire and beyond have access to high quality care and support at the right time, and in the right place.
“Through Tony’s leadership, our family of services haven’t stood still, caring for 3,000 people in 2022-23 – and looking to increase this by 50% by 2027. We’re delighted Tony’s work has been recognised with an OBE.”
