Kiplin Hall explores Yorkshire’s role in the birth of America

Re-enactors will be under fire at Kiplin Hall 22 and 23 August as the history of 1776 comes to life.

The story of how a Yorkshire country house helped shape the early history of the United States will be brought to life this summer through a special film screening and living history event at Kiplin Hall and Gardens.

The story centres on George Calvert, a local man who made Kiplin Hall his home before rising to prominence at the royal court as the First Baron Baltimore.

Driven by his vision of religious tolerance and new opportunities overseas, Calvert founded the colony that would eventually become the US state of Maryland, with generations of the Calvert family continuing to govern the colony.

To mark the 250th anniversary of American Independence, the documentary A Liberty of Conscience will be screened at The Station Cinema, Richmond, on Saturday, 4 July, at 4pm.

The film combines dramatic scenes filmed at Kiplin Hall with interviews featuring historians from both the UK and the United States, exploring the strong historical links between Yorkshire and the founding of America.

Emmy Award-winning producer and director W. Drew Perkins said working at Kiplin Hall with a film crew from both sides of the Atlantic was one of the highlights of his career.

Visitors will have another opportunity to step back in time during America 1776 Live, taking place at Kiplin Hall on 22 and 23 August 2026.

The immersive living history weekend will recreate life during the American Revolution, with authentic military encampments, 18th-century cooking demonstrations, cannon fire, skirmishes and costumed re-enactors portraying both British loyalists and American patriots.

The event offers visitors the chance to discover the people and events behind the struggle that saw 13 British colonies declare independence and ultimately form the United States of America.

America 1776 Live is included with day admission and annual memberships. Visitors are advised that dogs may find the cannon fire distressing. Kiplin Hall and Gardens is open six days a week, closing on Thursdays.
