Residents past and present are being invited to share their memories of All Saints Church as the village landmark prepares to celebrate its 175th anniversary.
The church, whose spire is a familiar sight from the A19 near Thirsk, will host a special weekend of celebrations on Saturday, September 19 and Sunday, September 20.
Organisers are now appealing for photographs, stories and memories connected to the church, whether people attended weddings, baptisms, funerals or community events there over the years.
The memories and images will be displayed as part of a commemorative “wall of memories” during the anniversary weekend.
Celebrations will include appearances by Peter Wright, who was born in Thirkleby, along with performances from a community choir and the Sessay Songbirds, as well as a Victorian-themed afternoon tea.
Organiser Gill Walmsley said the church had been at the heart of village life for generations.
She said: “A special church deserves a very special celebration and that’s what we plan for September but it’s the people who make the place.
“This church building has been an historic anchor to the community for 175 years and will have played an important part in many families’ lives, leaving precious memories.
“We want to create a wall of memories of words and pictures, whatever people would like to share.
“So, if you said hello or goodbye to someone, or even ‘I do’. If this church is carried in your heart like it is in ours then we would love to hear from you.”
The church will also be decorated in a Victorian theme for the anniversary celebrations.
Anyone wishing to contribute photographs or memories, or wanting more information about the events, is being asked to contact Gill Walmsley by email at [email protected] or via telephone or WhatsApp on 07969 571002.
