Europe’s largest conservation charity has outlined the scale of rubbish being dumped at its one of its most popular beauty spots ahead of crowds of visitors expected over the weekend.

The National Trust said Roseberry Topping, near Great Ayton, had proved an extremely popular destination since the lifting of lockdown restrictions, but visitors had been discarding large amounts of rubbish on the landmark.

A spokesman for the trust said despite the limited parking at the site wardens were regularly seeing as many visitors as they would only normally see on peak summer weekends.

He added: “Sadly, the amount of litter being left is quite shocking.”

The trust said wardens had been collecting about six full bin bags of rubbish a week and a large amount of litter was being taken away by volunteers and other unofficial helpers.

The wardens said one of the most heartening things had been the number of people who have been doing their bit by taking a carrier bag to the beauty spot to fill with litter on their walks.

The appeal to visitors comes after the North York Moors National Park Authority has reported issues with rubbish being dumped and first-time visitors to the area.

It also follows two girls being rescued from Roseberry Topping shortly after midnight on Thursday after they got lost in the fog.Categories: Public safety Litter
