Two men have been arrested after allegedly travelling into Northallerton and stealing a suitcase filled with whisky from a shop.
North Yorkshire Police said the two men, who were from outside the area, targeted a local store early this morning.
Officers were called and the suspects attempted to flee, with police saying the pair discarded items of clothing as they made off in an apparent attempt to change their appearance.
Both men were subsequently detained and arrested on suspicion of theft.
Police said the pair have also now been recalled to prison.
A force spokesperson joked: “They came for the whiskey, but ended up with porridge.”
They added: “Excellent work by responding officers and another reminder that travelling into North Yorkshire to commit crime rarely ends well.”
Police have not released further details about the store involved or the value of the alcohol allegedly stolen.
