Quilters to showcase handmade creations at charity exhibition in Ainderby Steeple

A village quilting group is inviting residents to enjoy an afternoon of crafts, cakes and community spirit at a special fundraising exhibition.

Morton Quilters will display a collection of handmade quilts at St Helen’s Church on Saturday, May 9, from 1.30pm to 4pm.

The exhibition will raise money for local causes, with proceeds supporting Northdale and the church. Entry is £5, and visitors will be able to browse a wide range of quilts created by members of the group, as well as take part in a tombola, purchase hand-sewn gifts and enjoy tea and cake.

The event will conclude with a raffle, offering the chance to win a handcrafted quilt as the top prize.

Organisers say the feature quilt has been specially created and is inspired by the tradition of Canadian Red Cross quilts made during the Second World War. These quilts were produced using recycled materials at a time when fabrics were scarce and were intended to provide comfort during difficult times.

Continuing that tradition, Morton Quilters hope their raffle quilt will bring “comfort and even joy” to its eventual owner. The design includes embroidered red crosses in tribute to the historic originals.

The group meets monthly at Morton on Swale village hall, where members come together for relaxed evenings of sewing, conversation and homemade refreshments.

Visitors to the exhibition will also have the opportunity to speak to current members and find out more about joining the group.

Organisers say the event promises a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while also raising valuable funds for the local community.
