New CCTV camera installed in Northallerton

A new CCTV camera in Northallerton is already proving its worth in fighting crime, officials say.

The camera on the main Friarage Street roundabout has been funded by Northallerton Business Improvement District (BID) and fills a gap in coverage within the Safer Hambleton Hub network, giving extra security and protection on the eastern edge of the town-centre.

The BID has worked with Hambleton District Council to erect the camera, which gives CCTV operators detailed coverage not only of businesses on Friarage Street but also improves security on key parts of Stokesley Road and East Road.

This busy area includes several pubs, restaurants and cafes as well as major outlets such as M&S Foodhall, Asda and Kwik Fit. Since the camera was installed three weeks ago, it has provided vital footage of security incidents and anti-social behaviour.

Installation fulfils a promise made in the 2021 BID Proposal to fund new CCTV cameras in areas where business security can be improved. Another new camera, installed near the railway station, has been funded by Hambleton District Council in an effort to track shoplifters who arrive by train.

“These new cameras are not only a vital new tool in our armoury against retail crime, they are also a deterrent for criminals and anyone indulging in anti-social behaviour,” said new BID manager Alex Shennib.

“We’re grateful to Hambleton District Council for installing them so quickly and ensuring our CCTV coverage becomes more effective than ever.”

Councillor Mark Robson, leader of Hambleton District Council, said: “It’s great news that we now have two new CCTV cameras in key locations in Northallerton.

“Feeling safe as you go about your day-to-day business is vital and additional cameras can only help with this.

“As a council we are always keen to invest in the things that matter to our residents and making sure our market towns are as safe as possible as we head into the busy summer months is key.”

The new cameras expand the Safer Hambleton network to 28 within Northallerton.
