Hambleton FoodShare has issued a thanks to its supporters after issuing the highest number emergency Christmas food parcels since it started eight years ago.
214 parcels were issued over the festive period, compared to 131 in 2019.
“We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who supported and helped us over the festive season,” said chairman Michael Webster.
“From those that took part in our 12 days of Christmas giving campaign or donated funds allowing us to buy stock when needed, to our big band of volunteers and to those businesses in the community who continue to support us.
“Without all of this support we would not have managed to have helped so many families.
“Just one of the comments we received from those we helped was ‘I just want to say how grateful I am for your kindness. Thanks to you, the children and I will be able to enjoy a happy Christmas’.
“As we find ourselves in yet another lockdown we want to stress that we are here to help. We appreciate it can be difficult as people may feel embarrassed asking for food parcels but we are just a community charity wanting to do our best to help feed those in need, so please do not be afraid to get in touch.”
Since the start of the first lockdown back in March 2020 the scheme has provided 2100 parcels — an increase of 64 per cent on the previous period.
To receive emergency food help customers must be able to demonstrate their need, primarily by being referred through an agency or by self-referral for their first visit by ringing 07514244158.
The volunteer-led food store is still open every Monday between 4pm and 6pm at The Living room, Garthway Arcade in Northallerton but only one customer at a time.

Although based in Northallerton and Bedale the scheme can also provide food parcels across Hambleton to individuals and families facing short term crisis including in Thirsk, Easingwold, Stokesley and the surrounding villages.
Donations of in date non-perishable food can still be left in Northallerton at: Tesco, Sainsburys, B&M, Lidl, Wilkinsons, Zetland Wine Store and in Bedale and Leeming Bar in the Co-op, Tesco and Spar.
Detail of current shortages are always on the website or Facebook but at the moment they are in need of UHT Milk, sponge puddings, instant potato, tinned vegetables, small jars of coffee, toilet roll, male and female deodorants, washing powder and shampoo.
