A total of 42 unwanted bikes were dropped off at Bedale Leisure Centre last weekend in the first of two collection sessions.
They included outgrown children’s bikes, four rescued from a skip, a 1980s ladies bike and a specialist fold up cycle.
The centre, in Firby Road, is being used as a drop-off point for donations of old and unused bikes.
They are then collected by the Yorkshire Bike Library team for recycling.
The Bike Libraries aim to make cycling more accessible across the county and get more people cycling.
Donations can be made again this Friday between 5pm and 8pm.
“We had a mix of bikes from all ages, but far more than we expected,” said Louise Lowcock, duty officer at Bedale Leisure Centre.
“There was a lady who brought her unused cycle in, she used to ride it to work every day.
And another couple who were keen cyclists brought in two bikes that they no longer use – they still have seven though!
“We even had a man who brought four in that he had seen in a skip.
“But the majority of people just thought this was a great way of passing on their unused cycles to people who don’t use of one now.”
