‘Good’ rating for Hambleton village primary school

Pupils and staff at East Cowton C of E Primary School have been celebrating after receiving a ‘good’ Ofsted rating from the education watchdog.

Following a recent visit to the village primary school located between Catterick and Northallerton, inspectors reported that “East Cowton Church of England Primary School continues to be a good school.”

During the visit inspectors remarked that: “Exemplary behaviour is typical” and that “Relationships are extremely strong. Staff want every pupil to shine, and they celebrate each pupil’s interests and talents.”

Inspectors added that: “Children in the early years settle into school well and mix with older children confidently. They are well supported by caring adults who help them to develop good communication skills.”

Headteacher Helen Dudman said: “Everyone in our school community is incredibly proud that we have retained our ‘GOOD’ Ofsted rating.

“I was particularly pleased to see the positive comments about our pupils’ behaviour and the caring ethos here. This is a fantastic reflection of what life is like in our warm and welcoming school, and it shows how well our older and younger pupils work together.”

Within their report, inspectors also noted that in lessons: “Pupils work hard in response to the high expectations of staff. Teachers make sure that pupils learn to work together. Younger pupils become independent quickly. They cooperate with each other to complete tasks.”

The inspection team also praised the teaching of early reading at the school, stating: “Children learn to read quickly. They progress through a well-structured phonics programme guided by expert staff. ”

Inspectors also praised the teachers at the school for their work with children with special educational needs.

Areas for improvement were also identified.

The report stated: “The school’s curriculum is not sufficiently well planned and sequenced in some subjects.

“However, it is clear from leaders’ actions that they are in the process of bringing this about.

“Leaders need to complete the process of reviewing the curriculum in all subjects within their identified timescale.”

This was the first inspection since the school joined the Dales Academy Trust (Dales) in 2017.

Damian Chubb, CEO of Dales, said: “The Trust has been busy with Ofsted visits over recent months, and it is heartening to be able to share the outcome of another really positive inspection.

“I am delighted that the Inspectors have recognised how our children thrive within the family atmosphere of our school.”

“The new school inspection framework is much tougher, and the efforts that school leaders have gone to as they ensure the very best for our children should not be underestimated. They deserve huge praise and respect.”
