Affordable rent and shared ownership homes to be built in Thirsk

The homes will be built off St Marys Close and St Marys Drive in Thirsk

A new housing development has been given the go-ahead, which should see 40 affordable homes built in Thirsk.

The plans to build the properties on grassland at the end of St Mary’s Close in the town were granted planning permission at Hambleton District Council’s last planning committee meeting.

The proposals included 15 three-bed properties, 15 two-bed  homes, along with eight two-bed bungalows and two one-bed properties. They would include affordable rent and shared ownership homes.

In report which went before councillors on the planning meeting, planning officers said the provision of much-needed affordable homes in Thirsk outweighed “any harm that may arise during the construction phase and in the subsequent occupation of the site.”

A number of letters of objection had been sent by local residents over the plans, raising concerns about a potential increase in cars it would bring.

The council felt the site was in a sustainable area, with local services accessible on foot from the site, and enough extra capacity in local schools to accommodate families.
