More than 60 artists and makers from across North Yorkshire will exhibit their work at Ampleforth Abbey next month as part of the annual North Yorkshire Open Studios showcase.

The selling exhibition will run from Saturday, July 11 to Sunday, July 19, transforming the recently restored Alban Roe House Visitor Centre into a series of mini galleries featuring paintings, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, jewellery, millinery and other handcrafted work.

Organised by the artist-run collective North Yorkshire Open Studios (NYOS) in collaboration with Ampleforth Abbey, the exhibition will be staged in the building’s former dormitory rooms, with each artist displaying their work in a space that once housed pupils’ beds and desks.

NYOS project manager Garth Bayley said the historic setting would provide visitors with a unique way to experience the exhibition.

“We are thrilled to bring this showcase to the truly unique setting of Ampleforth Abbey,” he said.

“We will be transforming the old dormitories into mini-galleries for our artists, giving visitors an incredibly intimate way to interact with the art while exploring a beautifully restored piece of North Yorkshire history.”

The exhibition will feature artists working across a wide range of disciplines, including York-based painter and printmaker Andrew Bloodsworth, ceramic artist Annette Cole from Scotton and mixed-media artist Alice O’Neill from Hutton-le-Hole.

Alongside the exhibition, visitors will be able to explore the Abbey estate, including its recently waymarked walking trails and orchard, which is home to more than 1,500 apple trees.

Guided tours of the Grade I-listed Abbey Church, designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, will also take place on Thursdays and Sundays at 2pm.

Catherine Hodgson, head of marketing at Ampleforth Abbey, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the North Yorkshire Open Studios exhibition at Ampleforth Abbey once again, as part of our commitment to supporting local and independent artists.

“We would encourage everyone to support this celebration of art and creativity in North Yorkshire.”

The exhibition follows the North Yorkshire Open Studios summer weekends, which attracted thousands of visitors to artists’ studios across the county. A Winter Open Studios event is also planned for Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8.
