Police arrested eight people and seized suspected stolen property during a major day of action across Hambleton as part of North Yorkshire Police’s latest Operation Tornado initiative.
The intensification day saw officers carrying out enforcement activity, business visits, road safety operations and community engagement events across the district.
During the 12-hour operation, officers:
- Arrested eight individuals for a range of offences
- Recovered a suspected stolen quad bike
- Seized 48 packets of illegal tobacco
- Visited local businesses and licensed premises
- Seized three vehicles during road safety and traffic offence operations
- Spoke with 120 school pupils about safety and awareness
- Held community engagement events with residents
- Safeguarded vulnerable people suspected of being exploited
Officers also conducted immigration compliance visits at several businesses alongside partner agencies to ensure people were living and working in the UK legally, while identifying and safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
Teams visited licensed premises to work with staff and licence holders on preventing alcohol-related crime and disorder, while patrols were carried out in town centres, residential neighbourhoods and on key roads throughout the district.
In Northallerton, officers hosted a public engagement stall at the market, giving residents the chance to speak directly with neighbourhood policing teams about local concerns and crime prevention.
Scott Bisset said: “Operation Tornado is about taking a proactive and highly visible approach to keeping our communities safe, while working closely with the people who live and work here.
“Yesterday’s activity showed how effective it is when officers are out in strength, engaging with residents, listening to concerns and taking action on the issues that matter most locally.
“Whether that’s tackling anti-social behaviour, improving road safety, supporting businesses to operate lawfully or speaking directly with young people in schools, our focus is on prevention, reassurance and enforcement where it’s needed.
“By working together with our communities and partner agencies, we can make a real difference and ensure people feel safe, supported and confident in their local policing.”
Teresa Lam, Hambleton’s area commander, said the operation reflected the day-to-day work of officers but with additional resources focused on one area.
She added: “From patrols in our town centres and neighbourhoods, to working with businesses, licensed premises and schools, our focus is on prevention, reassurance and tackling issues before they escalate.
“By combining enforcement with community engagement and partnership working, we can make Hambleton a safer place and ensure local people feel confident in the policing service they receive.”
Operation Tornado is carried out monthly in different parts of York and North Yorkshire, combining high-visibility policing with targeted enforcement and community engagement activities.
