A motorist was stopped by police just minutes after leaving court despite being handed an immediate driving ban.
Kalamehan Puvanathayatharan, 43, of Middlesbrough, appeared at Harrogate Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, March 24, where he was disqualified from driving for six months after reaching 12 penalty points.
The latest offence related to speeding on Leyburn Road, Catterick Garrison, where he was recorded travelling at 37mph in a 30mph zone last July.
Despite being warned repeatedly in court that the disqualification took immediate effect, police suspected he would ignore the ban.
Meg Fox alerted the force control room shortly after the hearing, prompting officers from the Roads Policing Group to track the vehicle.
At around 12.27pm, PC Jack Dodsworth stopped the driver on the A168 near Dishforth as he travelled north towards Teesside.
The vehicle was seized and the driver was left to arrange alternative transport.
Police confirmed the incident is now under investigation.
Mrs Fox said the case demonstrated a “blatant disregard for the law and road safety”, adding that court staff remain vigilant and will report suspected offences.
PC Dodsworth added: “If you receive a disqualification from driving, it starts immediately.”
