Sowerby incident safely resolved after major police operation

A police incident at an address in Sowerby, near Thirsk, has now been successfully resolved following a large-scale response involving armed officers and trained negotiators.

The incident was first reported at 5.19am as an alleged aggravated burglary.

Officers attended the scene and the occupants were brought to safety by 5.52am.

Police later located a suspect inside a nearby property, and a safety cordon was put in place.

This included the deployment of armed officers, trained negotiators and a police drone.

The situation was brought to a safe conclusion at 12.03pm when a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and possession of drugs with intent to supply.

He has been taken into custody for questioning.

Police say the victims have been safeguarded and are receiving support while investigations continue at the address.

Officers say this was an isolated incident and there was no risk to the wider community.
