Four North Yorkshire rowers have set off on a gruelling challenge to cross the Atlantic.
The team, Row4Victory, are competing in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.
The international race is 3,000 nautical miles across the Atlantic Ocean and the four-man rowing team are attempting to be the first to reach the finish at Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua & Barbuda.
Team Row4Victory consists of four friends: Duncan Roy, former Royal Engineer from Ingleby Arncliffe; Fraser Mowlem, serving chief technician in the Royal Air Force from Linton-On-Ouse; Glyn Sadler, former Royal Marine from Borrowby and Will Quarmby, a landscape gardener from Ripon.
The four are putting their physical and mental strength to the test rowing across the ocean in aid of two military charities – the Royal British Legion and Soldier On! to commemorate 100 years since the end of the Great War.
The team are now well under way on their mammoth attempt to cross the unrelenting seas and aiming to win the four man pure class race.
Emotions were running high just before the start of this premier ocean event.
“It’s getting pretty intense now, as the top rowing teams from across the world have come together and are ready for this epic challenge. The camaraderie between all competitors is amazing,” said Will.
“We’re feeling incredibly excited as today’s the day we’ve been building up to for the last two years.
“Although we’re nervous about the unexpected, we are definitely in it to win it and have been from the start. Team Row4Victory are determined to give it our all and to do everything we can to achieve our dream goal. Let the adventure begin.”
The race could take 35-70 days to complete and the Row4Victory team will row in two hour shifts in pairs around the clock.

Described as the ‘World’s toughest endurance race’, Row4Victory are rowing 3000 miles to the race finish in English Harbour, Antigua.
To put this in to perspective, more people summit Mount Everest every year than have EVER rowed across an ocean. With storms, adverse weather conditions, hunger and sleep deprivation, the team are facing the toughest and most challenging race of their lives.
