Wicker sculptures on display in Northallerton for First World War centenary

Three pieces of artwork based on the biplanes of the First World War have gone on display in Northallerton.

The sculptures, made from wicker, incorporate symbolic poppies and have been suspended from the ceiling of Hambleton District Council’s headquarters in Northallerton.

The artwork has been commissioned by Thirsk artists Ann Akers and Jane Grainger – known collectively as Purple Jackdaw.

They are part of a series of events planned by the district council to honour the centenary of the First World War.

The artwork can be seen during the Civic Centre’s normal opening hours, from 8.45am to 5.15pm Monday to Thursday and from 8.45am to 4.45pm on Fridays until November 16.

The council is also currently running a ‘Soldier Trail’ in Northallerton, Thirsk, Bedale, Easingwold and Stokesley to mark the centenary.

A group of 20 shops and businesses in each town are displaying decorated cardboard cut-outs of soldiers.

Each display incorporates a letter and all 20 letters in each town can be collected and unscrambled to find a phrase relating to the war.

Participants can submit their phrase into a prize draw via entry forms collected from participating businesses.

Five prizes will be awarded, one per town.
