Runners raise money for unwanted cats and dogs

Hambleton Athletics and Running Club (HARC) has continued their charitable work with their latest HARC Angels 5km event.

Throughout December 2023, participants were invited to run or walk 5km to earn themselves a bespoke medal and raise funds for Lucie’s Animal Rescue in Thirsk.

The event was open to the public as well as club members, and could be completed anywhere.

Lucie Holmes and her family have opened their home to unwanted and stray cats, dogs and other pets, as well as sick and injured wildlife.

HARC representatives Lucy Allen and Gemma Wardle visited the rescue centre to present the cheque to Lucie and two of her  rescue puppies, Rascal and Pepper.

Lucie was delighted to receive the donation and asked that the money be paid directly to her vet to help with medical bills for the animals.

Club chair, Gemma, said: “The work Lucie and her family do to help these animals find the love and safety they deserve is inspirational.

“It has been our pleasure to raise funds to assist with Lucie’s work.

“We are incredibly grateful to all the HARC Angels who took part to make this donation possible.”

This latest event marks the fourth year of the club’s HARC Angels 5km series.

The £375 raised for Lucie’s Animal Rescue takes the fundraising total to £1,885, with several local charities benefitting from their efforts: Dementia Forward, Cleveland and Swaledale mountain rescue teams, and Hambleton Foodshare.
