Rishi Sunak has welcomed the success of Northallerton’s boxing club in attracting young people to the sport.

The Richmond (Yorks) MP called into one of the club’s regular training sessions in the basement of Northallerton Town Hall to meet the boxers, their coaches and parents.

After watching the various age groups being put through their training exercises and sparring routines, Mr Sunak said: “It is great to see so many young people being attracted to the sport which is so beneficial for all-round fitness, timing and reflexes.

“The club has a dedicated set-up in the Town Hall with a team of great coaches and supporters encouraging the young people to get the best out of themselves. I was very impressed.”

Adrian Coe, the club’s head coach, said the club’s fortunes had taken off since its relocation to the Town Hall from the Northallerton Forum in 2021.

“The club was founded in 2011 and this is the first time we have had a dedicated space to create a permanent gym. It has made a big difference and our numbers are booming. We are nearing capacity for the space and the number of coaches we have.

“Many organisations – like Northallerton Town Council – and businesses have been supportive and Rishi has shown great interest in what we have been doing.

“It was a real thrill for our team and the young people to meet him and explain why boxing is such a great sport.”

The club holds regular training sessions in the Town Hall Basement on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings. For more information contact 07505 113459.
