Tips on keeping Christmas green by reducing waste sent to landfill have been offered by Hambleton District Council.

The local authority is encouraging people to recycle as much as possible over the festive period.

Extra recycling bags are available from district council offices in Northallerton, Easingwold and Stokesley and people are encouraged to add glitter-free Christmas cards and certain wrapping paper to their recycling.

“If you need to contain extra recycling over Christmas and New Year then clear recycling sacks are available from the district council offices in Northallerton, Easingwold and Stokesley or you can ask your recycling collection crew for some,” said Paul Staines, director of Leisure and Environment.

“These sacks are not to be used for glass and must be tied and left next to your recycling bin on your collection day.”

Hambleton District Council has also offered the following advice:

  • Use the scrunch test on wrapping paper and gift bags. If you scrunch it and it does not spring back, it can be recycled.
  • You can recycle all your cardboard packaging; by flattening it you’ll save space in your bin.  Wet cardboard left next to your bin can’t be collected.
  • Toilet and kitchen rolls tubes often get forgotten but it is easy and worthwhile to recycle them
  • Food trays (not black), cans and foil only need a quick rinse and can also be put in the blue lidded recycling bin.
  • Glitter-free greetings cards can be recycled.
  • Glass jars and bottles must go in your blue box not your blue lidded bin.

Plastic bags, plastic wrappers, crisp packets, bubble wrap, cling film, polystyrene and unwanted plastic toys cannot yet be recycled via kerbside recycling.

Householders are asked to refer to their bin tag which details changes to refuse and recycling collection dates over the festive season.
