The incident happened at around 1pm on Wednesday, October 14, in the rear car park of the Golden Lion Hotel.
North Yorkshire Police said a dark-coloured car was reportedly having difficulty manoeuvring out of a parking space and through the car park, colliding with other vehicles parked there.
Officers said the incident continued for a considerable amount of time and are hoping someone may have witnessed what happened.
Police are also appealing directly to the driver, who they believe may be a local resident, to come forward.
Anyone who saw a dark-coloured vehicle attempting to leave the car park at the time, or who has information that could assist the investigation, is asked to contact PC Colin Irvine.
