People across North Yorkshire are being reminded to use the most appropriate NHS service if they need urgent, but not life-threatening, medical treatment.
University Hospitals Tees is encouraging patients with minor injuries and illnesses to attend the urgent treatment centres at The Friarage Hospital in Northallerton and the University Hospital of Hartlepool, rather than emergency departments.
The centres provide treatment for a range of conditions including minor cuts and wounds, sprains and strains, burns and scalds, minor fractures, bites and stings, as well as minor illnesses and infections. Both sites are also able to carry out X-rays for suspected fractures during daytime hours.
Patients suffering from life-threatening conditions, such as suspected heart attacks or strokes, severe breathing difficulties or major bleeding, should instead attend emergency departments, including those at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough and the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton.
Nicola Grieves, head of nursing at University Hospitals Tees, said: “Our urgent treatment centres provide excellent care for people with minor injuries and illnesses and are an important part of the services we offer locally.
“But they are not here for patients who need emergency care. For patients experiencing a serious or life-threatening condition, emergency care is available at The James Cook University Hospital and University Hospital of North Tees.
“By choosing the right service, patients can access the most appropriate care as quickly as possible and help us ensure all services are run safely.”
