A new service has been launched to help military families moving to North Yorkshire settle into their new communities and access support more quickly.
The ‘Settling In Service’, delivered by North Yorkshire Citizens Advice and Law Centre, is aimed at families relocating to Catterick Garrison, RAF Leeming and surrounding areas.
Funded by Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust through its On the Move Programme, the initiative recognises that adapting to a new area involves more than simply moving house.
Under the scheme, trained Settling in Supporters will provide personalised home visits and telephone consultations, helping families connect with local services, activities and community groups.
The project aims to reduce social isolation and help new arrivals build support networks and feel part of their local community.
As an added incentive, military families who book a free tailored settling-in session within six weeks of arriving in North Yorkshire will receive a complimentary Moving In Guide.
The charity is also recruiting volunteers to become founding Settling in Supporters. The role is open to military families who have themselves relocated to North Yorkshire within the last 24 months and are willing to use their experiences to help others make the transition.
Project manager Jenny Veitch said: “Moving frequently is a reality of military life, but finding your feet in a new community can be daunting. Our new service bridges the gap between arriving and truly belonging.”
She added that the project’s mission is to ensure newly arrived families feel less isolated and lonely, improving their wellbeing through support from local people who can introduce them to community networks and activities, alongside access to advice services when needed.
Military families interested in booking a settling-in session can email [email protected] or call 01423 224451.
Those interested in volunteering as a Settling in Supporter can apply online through the charity.
