New home for Hambleton Foodshare

Hambleton FoodShare volunteers celebrate receiving a Queen's Award.

A scheme which provides emergency food parcels for people facing temporary financial hardship is moving.

Hambleton FoodShare has been operating from the Zion United Reformed Church since its inception six years ago but from January 27 will be handing out parcels from The Living Room, based in Garthway Arcade, Northallerton.

The move will see the registered charity working more closely with other local groups who are also based in The Living Room, which provides a wide range of support for people with life issues ranging from stress and anxiety to depression and loneliness.

Organisers of the scheme say Christmas was very busy for FoodShare.

As well as distributing the usual parcels, 131 special Christmas parcels were given out – 90 more than last year.

In addition to the normal three day food parcels they were topped up with lots of Christmas treats such as mince pies, Christmas puddings, selection boxes and small gifts, bringing a bit of cheer to those who may have struggled over the festive period.

“This was only possible thanks to the amazing generosity of our communities and the devotion of our volunteers,” said FoodShare chairman, Michael Webster.

“Sadly there is no sign of the need for foodbanks going away, and so we continue to be totally dependent on both our communities and volunteers.

We hope people will find our new home more accessible and relaxing.”

The partnership provides a three-day food parcel to people in immediate financial crisis -through unemployment, incapacity or a delay in benefit payment.

The volunteer-led food store is open every Monday between 4pm and 6pm at The Living room, Garthway Arcade in Northallerton

To receive emergency food help customers must be able to demonstrate their need, primarily by being referred through an agency or by self-referral.
