A Thirsk man has been sentenced after spitting in the face and eye of a police officer during an incident in the town centre.
Blake Halliday, of Pinfold Place, Thirsk, was convicted of assault by beating of an emergency worker following the incident in Thirsk Market Place on January 26.
York Magistrates’ Court heard on Saturday that Halliday spat at the female officer while she was carrying out her duties, with the spit landing in her eye and on her face.
Halliday was found guilty of the offence following a trial on April 30.
He had previously pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in a public place in connection with the same incident.
Halliday has now been given a community order running until August 28, 2027.
As part of the sentence, he must abstain from drinking alcohol for 90 days, with his compliance electronically monitored until November 26.
The court record states that the alcohol abstinence and monitoring requirement was increased from 60 to 90 days because the offence involved an emergency worker.
Halliday must also complete up to 15 days of rehabilitation activity under the direction of his responsible officer.
He was ordered to pay £200 compensation, £650 towards Crown Prosecution Service costs and a £114 victim surcharge.
The court imposed no separate penalty for the drunk and disorderly offence, although his guilty plea was taken into account.
