North Yorkshire Police is calling on knitting enthusiasts to create and donate special teddy bears to help comfort traumatised children.

Bobby Buddies, which were created by Tracey Conroy and pioneered by Dorset Police, will be handed to youngsters who have experienced distressing incidents ranging from domestic violence to serious road traffic collisions.

They will be kept in police vehicles and police stations and handed out when required.

Chief Constable Lisa Winward is promoting the initiative and she has the full support of super-knitter Jean Simmons from Richmondshire, who has already donated dozens of Bobby Buddies to North Yorkshire Police.

Chief Constable Lisa Winward said: “Knitting a Bobby Buddie is a very special way for the local community to help children who have been exposed to distressing and traumatic experiences.

“The teddies show children that our officers and staff are approachable and care about what they are going through.

“More importantly, they help to provide comfort when they need it most.”

Knitting enthusiasts, from the very experienced like the fabulous Jean to novice knitters, are urged to download the Bobby Buddies knitting pattern by visiting www.northyorkshire.police.uk/news/how-knitters-can-help-children-in-distress and clicking the link half way down the story.

Supporters are urged pass the message on and share this web page with family, friends and colleagues on social media.

Chief Constable Winward added: “Everybody who gets involved in the Bobby Buddies initiative will be making a significant and much-appreciated contribution in the way we care for children caught up in distressing situations.

“On behalf of North Yorkshire Police, I’m deeply grateful for your support. You really will be making a difference.”

Completed Bobby Buddies should be handed in at the front counter at Northallerton Police Station, Crosby Road, Northallerton.
