Kiplin Hall & Gardens is one of nearly 70 museums and libraries across England to receive money from the Cultural Investment Fund.
Following a successful application to the MEND (Museum Estate and Development) Fund, the £400,000 will be used for essential repairs to the roof of the Victorian mock gothic library, an extension on the original Jacobean Hall.
The MEND Fund helps protect treasured buildings and collections for future generations.
Director at Kiplin, James Etherington, said: “We are thrilled to receive this funding which will help us to continue to keep Kiplin Hall looking wonderful, preserving its important story.
“Roof repairs on historic buildings are always a worry.
“Following a planned survey, we became aware the roof was in need of attention and set about seeking funds to make repairs.
“Not the most glamorous element of museum work, but a very important part of our responsibility to care for this hall.
“Scaffolding will need to go up in 2025 to enable the work to take place, which will give us an exciting opportunity to dress the building in a visually interesting way.”
Work on this project is expected to start in 2025.
Building firm Tom Willoughby are currently onsite at Kiplin working on a separate project to create a new welcome centre, set to open later in 2024.
Both building projects are expected to go ahead with minimal disruption to visitors.
