Hambleton residents urged to love their markets

A fortnight long campaign encouraging local people to love their markets is being supported by Hambleton District Council’s vibrant market team.

Stall holders on the two authority run markets – in Northallerton and Thirsk – are taking part in the National Association of British Market Authorities ‘love your local market’ initiative.

The campaign recognises the importance of markets in the local community and aims to help them adapt and innovate to ensure they can continue to thrive both now and in the future.

“This campaign celebrate small businesses at the heart of our communities.” said Deputy Leader of the Council, Councillor Peter Wilkinson.

‘Our fabulous markets are important contributors to making our towns vibrant and we are keen to ensure they remain a key element of our town experience for residents and visitors.”

This year’s theme is ‘Markets: Close to Your Heart’ and is encouraging people to rediscover them and as part of the celebrations council officers have interviewed some of the traders to get their views  and create trader profiles.

Adam Jackson who owns a local plant nursery and has been trading at Northallerton market for the last ten years said people are a lot more selective now than ten years ago.

“They are looking for quality but all my customers are lovely – the eldest customer is 101,” he said.

“They appreciate my knowledge and honesty on what plants are suitable for them. I enjoy working Northallerton market and feel part of a team.”
