The coordinator of a scheme which provides emergency food parcels for people facing temporary financial problems has retired.
Margaret Brice has been involved with the Hambleton FoodShare since its launch six years ago and for the last four years has been its coordinator.
In that time Margaret has seen the number of food parcels issued rise from 1126 per year to 1492 and the number of volunteers rise to 70.
Presenting her with a gift token former FoodShare chairman, David Kerfoot MBE, paid tribute to her wholehearted commitment to the scheme and the way it had developed through her efforts and determination.
Christmas was particularly busy for FoodShare. As well as distributing the usual parcels, over 40 special Christmas parcels were given out, bringing a bit of cheer to those who may have struggled over the festive period.
“This was only possible thanks to the amazing generosity of our communities and the devotion of our volunteers,” said current FoodShare chairman, Michael Webster.
“Sadly there is no sign of the need for foodbanks going away, and so we continue to be totally dependent on both our communities and volunteers.”
The community led partnership provides a three day food parcel to people in immediate financial crisis -through unemployment, incapacity or a delay in benefit payment. The volunteer-led food store is open every Monday between 4pm and 6pm at the Zion United Reformed Church in Northallerton with a satellite scheme in Bedale.
To receive emergency food help customers must be able to demonstrate their need, primarily by being referred through an agency or by self-referral.
