Hambleton council leaders approve council tax freeze

Hambleton District Council (HDC) has agreed not to increase its share of the council tax bill for 2021/22.

At a meeting of full council held virtually yesterday, councillors agreed the amount of council tax residents should pay for services from HDC for the forthcoming year, should stay the same as in 2020/2021.

Leader of Hambleton District Council Cllr Mark Robson said: “The impact of the COVID crisis on families and businesses across our district has been significant, with people facing huge struggles financially on top of worries about their own health and their loved ones catching or becoming seriously ill with COVID.

“As Leader my aim is simple, and that is to offer practical and tangible support to our residents and businesses wherever and however I can, and this decision is the only right and fair one.

“My hope is that this will help to reassure people, ease some of the pressure people are under and most importantly offer a helping hand when its most needed.

“I hope it also shows that as a council we are listening and have a good understanding of what matters to our communities and what will make a real difference to people at this very difficult time.”

Council tax bills in Hambleton are made up of services provided by Police, Fire, the County Council, and the Parish Councils who all independently set their own rates of increase every year.

A break down can be found on council tax bills so residents can see exactly what they are paying for and how much.

Hambleton District Council says it has carried out “careful and detailed analysis of finances” to enable a freeze on the council tax rate for their part of the bill and offering a freeze is achievable and is in line with the council’s financial strategy.

The authority claims the decision not to increase council tax will not impact on the level of service residents and businesses expect from Hambleton District Council.

Council tax bills will now be prepared, and residents can expect to receive them in March as usual.
