Firefighters were called out to rescue three separate motorist who had driven into flood water on the A684 at Morton-on-Swale.

Motorists have been urged not to drive into flood water after the rescues yesterday by crews from Northallerton Fire Station.

North Yorkshire Council said it had deployed highways officers to stop drivers driving around the ‘road closed’ signs.

A spokesperson said yesterday: “We close roads to protect lives, property and livelihoods.

“We currently have highways officers at Morton-on-Swale to stop people going past the road closure signs and attempting to drive through deep flood water.

“This means that these officers are not available to deal with issues in other locations which could be impacting other people or homes.

“Driving through road closures also has an impact on the emergency services, including North Yorkshire Police.

“Please help us protect people and homes by not attempting to drive through road closures or flood water.”

The road remains closed this morning.
