The public has been urged to take care near water after a body was pulled from a river at Great Ayton.

The man’s body was found in the River Leven at Great Ayton on Saturday morning.

Firefighters from Stokesley and Whitby were called to the scene to recover the body from the water.

Station manager Bob Hoskins, from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, urged the public to take care near water this winter.

“Temperatures are very low and even shallow water can be dangerous,” he added.

A cordon was erected for several hours on the High Street in Great Ayton on Saturday morning while the emergency services were at the scene.

Police say the death is not believed to be suspicious.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: “Police were called at 8.45am on Saturday by a member of the public who found the body of a man in a stream at Great Ayton.

“Officers attended the scene with colleagues from the ambulance service and the fire and rescue service.
