Conservatives have failed to back North Yorkshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Julia Mulligan to continue in the role beyond 2020.
Tory party members voted against allowing Ms Mulligan to be the automatic Conservative choice for the job at a meeting in Tadcaster last night.
The vote means other candidates will now be able to stand to represent the party in May 2020. Mrs Mulligan can also put herself forward for a place on the shortlist if she wants.
Ms Mulligan was elected as police and crime commissioner in 2012 and took over the governance of North Yorkshire’s fire and rescue service additionally last year.
In recent months she had faced bullying allegations from former staff and been criticised by North Yorkshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Panel for putting forward the county’s biggest increase in police council tax precept without detailed information on how it would be spent.
