It happened on Aireyholme Lane at about 4.10pm on Sunday.
The chainsaw valued at £1,200 was taken by four males on quad bikes.
Police are appealing for information about any CCTV showing men on quad bikes in the Great Ayton, Guisborough or Hutton Gate areas.
Officers are also asking for information regarding the whereabouts of an orange STIHL MS441 chainsaw with serial number 173939678.
