Two care home residents who have spent years exchanging letters as pen pals have finally met face-to-face in an emotional reunion.

Shirley Wills, a resident at HC-One‘s Hambleton Grange Care Home in Thirsk, travelled to sister home Beaconsfield Court in Barnard Castle to meet her long-time pen pal Grace Ash.

The friendship began a couple of years ago as part of a pen pal initiative encouraging residents at HC-One care homes to connect with one another through letter writing.

A keen writer, Shirley quickly embraced the project and soon began regularly corresponding with Grace. Over time, the pair developed a close friendship through their letters and had hoped to meet in person.

However, several planned reunions had to be postponed because of ill health and transport difficulties.

This week, their long-awaited meeting finally took place.

Shirley travelled to Barnard Castle, where the two friends spent the morning chatting over lunch and enjoying each other’s company after years of getting to know one another through the post.

Both women said they were delighted to finally meet face-to-face.

Grace said: “I love the photo of us – it’s like we have been friends forever, Shirley. It was wonderful to see you and I hope one day we meet again.”

Shirley added: “It was wonderful to meet Grace. We had a lovely morning chatting together.”

Staff at both homes described the reunion as a special moment and a testament to the success of the pen pal scheme.

Elaine Snowden, Lifestyle Manager at Hambleton Grange, said: “It’s great that we could finally get Grace and Shirley together after all this time. They really hit it off, and it was lovely to see their friendship continue in person.

“The pen pal project has been a wonderful way of helping residents make meaningful connections, and this meeting was a very special moment for everyone involved.”
