Bikes delivered to Northallerton businesses ahead of world championships

Hambleton District Council Leader, Councillor Mark Robson and Cabinet Member, Councillor Bridget Fortune are pictured delivering the first bike to Susan Ganderton of Earth Unwrapped on Northallerton High Street.

Hundreds of rainbow coloured bikes are being delivered to businesses across Northallerton as the town gets ready for the UCI Road World Championships.

The district council is giving every High Street business a bike to decorate their shop windows or business reception to greet the riders on September 25.

The men’s elite time trial starts from the town that day – with up to 80 riders expected to cycle down the High Street on their way to a finish in Harrogate.

The authority is working with Northallerton BID to paint the town all the colours of the rainbow – the UCI colours – to welcome the riders and visitors to the town.

Businesses are being invited to enter a best dressed competition – and to start them off the bikes are being delivered over the next week.

Bunting will also festoon the high street – including that made by local knitting groups.  An appeal for donations of wool has gone out for them – with collection points in the Town Hall, Leisure Centre and Civic Centre.

Each business will receive one bike from the council, but extras can be bought for £10 each.  Local residents can also buy the bikes to decorate homes on the route out of town.

The bikes are available from the Civic Centre –  or call 01609 779977 to order before collection.
