Hundreds of artists across North Yorkshire are set to welcome visitors into their creative spaces as part of this year’s Summer Open Studios.
The popular event, organised by North Yorkshire Open Studios (NYOS), will take place over two weekends – Saturday, June 6 to Sunday, June 7 and Saturday, June 13 to Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Art lovers will have the chance to explore a wide range of studios across the county, from the remote Upper Dales to the North York Moors, as well as towns including Harrogate and across the Vale of York.
Among the unique locations opening to the public are a Victorian school in Skipton, an old milking parlour in Stainburn and a wildlife-filled garden studio in Gilling East.
The event showcases work from both emerging and established artists, spanning a variety of styles and media, and offers visitors the rare opportunity to meet creators in their working environments.
A preview evening is also planned for Friday, June 5.
Garth Bayley, project manager at NYOS and one of the participating artists, said the event gives people a unique insight into the creative process.
He said: “What makes the Summer Open Studios so special is the rare chance to step behind the scenes and see art in the very places it is created. Instead of just looking at a finished piece on a gallery wall, visitors can talk to the makers, see the tools they use and explore the landscapes that inspire them.
“It’s a curiosity-filled day out that connects the public with our region’s rich history and its vibrant contemporary art scene.”
Featured artists include painter A.C. Telfer, whose studio is based in a former Victorian school in Skipton, basket maker Fiona Arnold, who works from a converted milking parlour in Stainburn, and painter and sketcher Jonathan Pomroy, who draws inspiration from wildlife around his garden studio in Gilling East.
A.C. Telfer said visitors will be able to see work at various stages and learn more about techniques, including demonstrations using acrylic inks.
Fiona Arnold said opening her studio allows her to share the stories and processes behind her work, while Jonathan Pomroy hopes visitors will be inspired by his passion for wildlife and conservation.
Summer Open Studios is part of a wider programme of events organised by NYOS throughout the year, including a spring showcase in Danby, a summer exhibition at Ampleforth Abbey and a winter open studios weekend in November.
Brochures, including venue details and maps, are available online, with further information about participating artists also accessible via the NYOS website.
