Antiques experts will be heading to Ampleforth Abbey next month for a special valuation day celebrating the work of renowned Yorkshire craftsman Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson.
Tennants Auctioneers will hold its first valuation event at the abbey on Wednesday, October 21, with specialists offering free, no-obligation auction valuations between 11am and 3pm.
Visitors are invited to bring along antiques and collectables including Mouseman and other Yorkshire Critters furniture, jewellery, glass and ceramics, clocks and watches.
No appointment is required for the valuation sessions, which will take place at the Visitor Centre.
The event will also explore the close relationship between Ampleforth and Robert Thompson, whose workshop was based just a few miles away at Kilburn.
Ampleforth Abbey and College was the craftsman’s most significant commission and played an important role in his career.
Over the decades, Thompson produced an array of furniture and fittings for the site, including a unique fitted library.
As part of the day, Tennants’ Mouseman specialist Diane Sinnott will give a talk examining the evolution of Thompson’s work, his connections with Ampleforth and the story behind his iconic Monk’s Chair.
The talk will begin at 9.45am, with tickets costing £15 including refreshments.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to see some of Thompson’s work in its historic setting during a special Mouseman tour of the Abbey Church and Ampleforth College Library at 3pm.
Tickets for the tour cost £10.
Organisers said places for both the talk and tour are limited and early booking is recommended, with tickets available through Ampleforth Abbey.
The free valuation event itself runs from 11am until 3pm and does not require advance booking.
