A man has been charged after police stopped a suspected stolen car displaying cloned registration plates on the A1 near Leeming Bar.
Officers from North Yorkshire Police’s Roads Policing Unit stopped the Volkswagen Golf on the northbound carriageway yesterday afternoon, August 11.
Police said the vehicle was believed to be using cloned number plates and had been stolen from another area.
National Highways assisted officers by slowing traffic while specially trained police brought the Golf to a safe stop in the outside lane.
The vehicle and its sole occupant were then safely moved onto the hard shoulder.
A subsequent search of the car uncovered a large number of other registration plates, police said.
The plates were seized along with the vehicle.
The driver, a man in his 50s from County Durham, was arrested on suspicion of a number of offences.
He was subsequently charged with driving while disqualified and driving without insurance.
North Yorkshire Police said its investigation into the suspected theft of the vehicle and the cloned registration plates remains ongoing.
