Two of North Yorkshire’s most dedicated football figures have been recognised for more than half a century of service to the sport.
Jim Wilson and Martyn Coombs have each received the prestigious Football Association 50 Years Service to Football Award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to grassroots football across the region.
The awards were presented by North Riding FA director Dave Goodwin during a ceremony at Bedale Sports Club and Community Centre.
Paying tribute to the pair, Mr Goodwin said: “Jim and Martyn represent everything that is great about grassroots football. Their dedication, passion and service over more than 50 years have left a lasting legacy across our region. This award is a fitting recognition of two truly outstanding individuals.”
Jim Wilson’s involvement in football began as a player before he qualified as a referee in 1972.
After officiating youth matches in Birmingham, he moved to Leyburn in 1976 and became a familiar figure in football across North Yorkshire.
Over the following decades, he refereed extensively in the Wensleydale League and also took charge of matches in the Darlington & District League, Teesside League and Northern League. During his 20 years in the Northern League, he officiated at several televised fixtures at famous grounds including Roker Park, Ayresome Park and Feethams.
Martyn Coombs qualified as a referee in 1976 and has spent almost five decades officiating matches, primarily in the Hambleton Football Combination League.
His refereeing career also included appointments in the Wensleydale, North Yorkshire and Teesside leagues, as well as duties as a linesman in the Northern League.
Among his highlights were representative fixtures and serving as fourth official at Roker Park for a professional match between Sunderland and Stoke City.
Away from officiating, Mr Coombs has played a major role at Bedale AFC.
After nearly 30 years as a player, he went on to serve as club secretary for 20 years and now holds the positions of chairman and treasurer.
His leadership has helped support multiple teams and contributed to raising around £200,000 for charitable causes through football initiatives.
