Prolific street beggar jailed after breaching order in Northallerton

A man has been jailed after breaching a court order designed to prevent persistent anti-social behaviour in Northallerton.

Bradley Grimes, 31, of Wicklow Street, Middlesbrough, was sentenced to six months in prison after failing to comply with the conditions of his Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO).

The incident took place last Thursday morning when two Police Community Support Officers on patrol in Northallerton spotted Grimes sitting outside a bakery with a plastic tub lid placed in front of him.

Checks confirmed he was in breach of his CBO, which prohibits him from sitting on the ground outside food outlets or commercial premises.

Grimes was arrested at the scene, charged and later remanded into custody.

Rory Sadler, from the local neighbourhood policing team at North Yorkshire Police, said the action demonstrated the importance of enforcing such orders.

He said: “Criminal Behaviour Orders are there to protect communities from persistent behaviour. When someone repeatedly ignores warnings, we will take action.

“While we remain committed to offering support to individuals facing challenging circumstances, persistent offending and repeated breaches of Criminal Behaviour Orders cannot be ignored. These orders help people feel safe in their neighbourhoods.”

Police said the enforcement of the order was part of ongoing efforts to tackle anti-social behaviour and support safer town centres.
