North Yorkshire Police have issued a warning to pickup truck owners following a recent rise in thefts across the county.
Officers say Toyota Hilux models are being particularly targeted by thieves, with a number of incidents reported in North Yorkshire and neighbouring force areas.
The vehicles are widely used by farmers and rural communities, prompting police to urge owners to take extra precautions to protect them.
Neighbourhood policing teams have been carrying out crime prevention patrols in rural areas and speaking directly with owners of higher-risk vehicles.
Sergeant Lauren Wilkinson, of the Richmondshire Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “While no security system is foolproof, taking precautionary measures will significantly reduce the risk of theft or damage to your Toyota Hilux.
“More and more vehicles in our area are being protected by trackers and other security systems, making life extremely difficult for thieves. By continuing to invest in high-quality crime prevention kit, parking in secure locations, and remaining vigilant, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that your vehicle is as well-protected as possible.”
Police are encouraging owners to consider fitting tracking devices, steering wheel locks, immobilisers and CCTV systems to deter criminals.
Officers also warned that thieves may be using keyless entry technology to steal vehicles. Known as “relay theft”, this involves using devices to capture the signal from a key fob inside a home and trick the car into unlocking and starting.
Residents are advised to keep keys well away from vehicles, use signal-blocking pouches such as Faraday bags, and regularly check their effectiveness.
Anyone concerned about vehicle security can contact their local neighbourhood policing team for advice or to arrange a crime prevention visit.
