MP joins coaching programme founded by an Army veteran

Rishi Sunak joined young footballers in Northallerton to support a growing coaching programme founded by an Army veteran.

Visiting Total Control Soccer during its Friday evening session at Oakbridge Church of England Primary School in Northallerton, the local MP met children and parents and took part in training activities designed to build confidence, coordination and teamwork from an early age.

Total Control Soccer was founded by coach Callum Plumb after returning home from service and starting a family.

Having seen first-hand the positive role sport can play in shaping direction and discipline, he set out to create opportunities for young people locally, particularly those not already part of formal grassroots teams.

The programme now runs four sessions every Friday evening, welcoming children from as young as 18 months up to 14 years old. Alongside weekly coaching, Total Control Soccer also delivers school holiday camps, providing full-day activity sessions that help children stay active, develop friendships and continue building their skills outside term time.

Mr Sunak spoke with families about the importance of accessible local activities and joined in with warm-up drills and passing exercises alongside the young players.

Following the visit, the Richmond and Northallerton MP said:  “It was fantastic to see the energy and enthusiasm at Total Control Soccer and to join the young people taking part. What Callum has built is about much more than football, it’s about confidence, teamwork and giving young people a positive environment to grow. Programmes like this are a huge asset to our local community.”

Callum Plumb, founder and coach at Total Control Soccer, said: “It was a pleasure to have Rishi join us for a session, the kids and parents enjoyed having him attend and participate”.

“Total Control Soccer was set up to give local children in our area more opportunities to access sport and activity. We currently have an amazing group of young people attending our sessions and we are excited to grow and give the opportunity to more young people in our area.”
