The action begins with a mile nursery handicap (2.20). Despite a small field of just five runners, this still looks a competitive contest. Dunkfield Dreamer runs off the same mark as when third of eight last time at Beverley, but carries less in this company, therefore looks to have a real chance for Karl Burke. Further up the handicap, Port Darwin and Rawalpindi Express both won their last starts, and have both risen in the weights as a result.
Next is a five-furlong nursery handicap (2.50). Bryan Smart’s Dandy Style could go well on handicap debut, back down to five furlongs, while the travelling Mission Classified could have a real chance, now down two pounds from a good run last time out at Windsor. Course and distance winner Under The Radar looks tempting too, two pounds lower than last time at Haydock, when he was beaten under four lengths.
We have a six-furlong two-year-olds’ novice next (3.25). With nearly £16,000 as the winning prize, this is a valuable race, so should be hotly contested. Julie Camacho’s Hewi is the only newcomer here and, while he is a nice looking prospect, others are more convincing until we see what he can do. The Amo Racing-owned Zoiros should be a leading contender here, after a near miss over this distance at Newcastle in June, and Tim Easterby’s Deep Sleep should enter calculations too after a good debut here three weeks ago.
A seven-furlong fillies’ handicap follows (4.00). This is a hot race; Jim Goldie’s Jannas Journey has won five consecutive races this term and shows few chinks in her armour at present, so could very well win again up in class. George Boughey’s Orchid should be in with a chance of winning back-to-back races here too at the top of the handicap, but is given five pounds by rider Jack Callan. She steps back up to seven furlongs for the first time since her debut, and must translate her winning ability from the all-weather over to the turf.
Following is a six-furlong handicap (4.35). The consistent Pianoforte was a touch below his best last time at Ayr, but could reasonably bounce back today for Julie Camacho, having come down a pound in the weights since. Course and distance winner Lorna B steps back to her better trip here, after seven furlongs last time, and should factor in the shake up, as should Mister Sox, who has Sean Kirrane back in the saddle, who rode the horse to victory two runs ago at Ripon. Juan Les Pins, though, might have quietly come down to a very dangerous mark for Mick Appleby.
The penultimate race is the mile and half Hambleton Cup handicap (5.05). Sir Mark Prescott’s Bosphorus Rose seeks a hat-trick today after winning at both Epsom and Catterick, and this doesn’t look beyond her capabilities. Jim Goldie’s Tafsir is a fairly reliable sort who should put in a good show of himself, while Ian Williams’ Shahbaz could make the placings nearer the bottom of the handicap.
Last of all is a seven-furlong handicap (5.35). It might turn out to be the warmest race of the whole day, with a great quantity of good recent form and competitive marks on show here. Five-pound claimer Sam Feilden is employed to ride Highfield Viking, who seeks a hat-trick for John and Sean Quinn, which largely cancels out his having risen in the weights since his last victory at Chepstow. Boy Douglas has been given some time to freshen up and also has a claiming rider in the saddle, so could win this.
