Dog owners urged to use designated areas at Sowerby sport village

Dog owners have been urged to only use designated areas at Sowerby’s new sports village which is getting ready to host organised activities.

Contractors will begin marking out pitches next week ready for football training and matches.

Thirsk Falcons Football Club and Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers will be using the facility for organised activity.

But with that comes changes to the use of the area by dog walkers.

“We opened the sports village up last year at the start of the pandemic to give people a place to exercise – sport wasn’t allowed at that time so we were able to be relaxed about how people used the site, particularly dog owners,” said Hambleton District Council’s Director of Leisure and Communities, Steven Lister.

“However now that team sport can start up again we need to urge them to only use designated areas for walking their dogs making it safe for the players and other users.

“The sports village was created for the health and well being of everyone and we understand that people love their dogs and need to exercise them regularly – but we ask them to respect the sports pitches as the sports village moves to its next phase and we introduce organised team sport.”

They are asked to keep dogs on leads on the main paths around the site and not take them on to the land used as sports pitches.

The sports village will be coded into red, amber and green zones making it easier for dog owners to know where they can freely exercise their animals.

Signs will be in place around the village to guide owners as follows:

  • green – dogs can freely use these areas, off a lead
  • amber – dogs can walk these areas but must be kept on a lead
  • red – dogs are not allowed within these areas

Details on the policy for dogs can be found at: https://www.hambleton.gov.uk/downloads/file/2233/dogs-policy-for-sowerby-sports-village

All the pitches must be booked in advance – through communities@hambleton.gov.uk
