Council offices go green for Recycle Now week

Stokesley residents thank waste crews for their hard work during lockdown.

Hambleton’s Civic Centre will light up green this week to celebrate national Recycle Now week.

From September 21 to 27, landmarks across the country will light up green, including Northallerton’s Civic Centre.

The district council is using the week to thank residents for improved recycling rates.

During lockdown, the authority recorded a 22 per cent increase in the weight of kerbside collections of paper, card, plastics, and bottles.

Councillor Stephen Watson said: “This was partly because people were spending time at home – but also because they have become even more environmentally aware.

“Our waste crews were amazing throughout this period, continuing to provide a service with very little disruption – and in recognition they received cards, posters, gifts and thankyou messages from residents, which boosted moral during a difficult time.”

Throughout the week, Hambleton Recycling & Waste social media accounts will be promoting tips on how to increase recycling and reduce waste, including flattening cardboard boxes and plastic bottles.
