Tractor treat for retired farmer’s special celebration

A retired farmer was treated to a party to remember as staff and residents at Kensington Care Home in Northallerton came together to celebrate his life and career.

George Barker, 92, was joined by family and friends, including his wife Molly, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, for a special afternoon honouring his achievements.

To make the occasion even more memorable, the care home arranged for a brand-new tractor to be brought to the home — a fitting tribute to George’s lifelong passion for farming. The surprise was made possible thanks to the generosity of Paxtons, who kindly loaned the vehicle for the day.

George also received a visit from the Mayor of Northallerton, Cllr Andrew Hugill, who joined residents and staff for the celebrations.

As part of the event, George enjoyed a “This is Your Life”–style presentation, reflecting on his life at Thornborough Farm, near Northallerton, and his many achievements — including being named Yorkshire Dairy Farmer of the Year. He also authored the book Carthorses to Computers, chronicling his journey through decades of change in the farming industry.

The celebration was organised by Kensington’s activities co-ordinators Jennifer Rowell and Carol Rutherford.

“George is one of our oldest residents and someone who is much-loved by everyone,” said Jennifer.

“We wanted to do something truly special to celebrate his amazing life and all he has achieved.”
